Somber 150th Civil War Anniversary Observed in Charleston
The Fort Sumter commemoration on the 150th anniversary opened with cannon fire and a light beam over Fort Sumter as Charleston marked the start of the Civil War. Speakers noted ongoing regional and racial tensions while urging reflection and inclusion. About 1,200 attended ceremonies on James Island and nearby sites, including comments from State Sen. Glenn McConnell on lingering disputes over slavery and symbols.
