Lock and Dam in Limbo as Counties Seek Open Status

Aiken County and the City of North Augusta may jointly sponsor the Savannah Lock and Dam to keep it open. A Wednesday meeting with the US Army Corps of Engineers and lawmakers outlined an "outline to move forward" but many conditions must be met. The Corps signaled a possible cease of operation if no need for commercial traffic remains, and a January water level test showed a lower pool if decommissioned.

SRS downsizing plan offers early retirement incentive

Westinghouse Savannah River Company seeks to restructure the Savannah River Site workforce to meet current and future missions. About 580 employees may qualify for an early retirement incentive approved by the Department of Energy, with other voluntary options explored.
