The government introduces $2 bills to honor Thomas Jefferson with 400 million new bills by year end, 225 million released today. President Ford received the first bill from Treasury Secretary Simon in a White House ceremony. the bill cost two $1 notes.
The Senate supports President Ford's record peacetime defense budget of 101.1 billion dollars, approving a total fiscal 1977 spending ceiling of 412.6 billion. An attempt to cut defense programs by 500 million was defeated 58 to 27, trimming only 300 million from the request.
A San Francisco judge ordered the 14 day municipal craft workers strike to end as union leaders reject a new proposal. The plan would ease pay cuts by spreading them over three years to lessen the impact on workers and families, according to Quentin Kopp, president of the Board of Supervisors.
An explosion at the Lapua ammunition factory 230 miles north of Helsinki killed at least 37 and wounded more than 30, most victims women in the cartridge loading plant. The government formed a commission to investigate as officials noted the blast tore the one story plant apart and foremen were dead or injured.
President Hafez Assad warned at a Damascus rally of possible Syrian military moves into Lebanon to shield victims of aggression. He said Syria has full freedom of movement and the capability to take any position. Egypt urged him to stay away from Yasir Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Two Democrats entered the race yesterday or filed for office. Rhea J. Burgess seeks the county treasurer seat and Marion D. McGowan seeks the District 84 House of Representatives seat. Burgess, former Aiken County finance coordinator, has a long county office career ending with a 1975 firing amid controversy.
