Search expanded for bodies along Mulberry River banks

In Gainesville Georgia authorities said heavy earthmoving equipment would join the search today on the Mulberry River bank for more bodies. Only one body, Otis Reidling 24 of Winder, has been recovered to date. His uncle James Reidling criticized officials for permitting lawlessness contributing to the death.

Delays at Savannah River Center Cost Aiken County

The Savannah River Pre-release Center delays extend past its May opening to June 20. Aiken County budgeted 85 000 for security for a 12 month period, with 6 250 per month in delays and 43 750 spent so far for guard service. County officials cite potential higher costs if security had not been contracted.

Aiken County School District Eyes Anti-Drug Grant

The Aiken County Board of Education approved seeking an U S Education grant for an anti drug program in Area No 2 North Augusta Beech Island Jackson. District staff will train in Miami and a coordinator will lead the program serving grades 7 12 with emphasis on 9 12.

Steel Workers Reach Tentative Accord On New Contract

The United Steelworkers reached a tentative contract for 350000 workers and sent it to a committee of local officials for final approval. The pact includes wage increases totaling over 60 cents an hour over three years plus a large fringe benefits package. North Vietnam Overruns Ranger Base Near Saigon

North Vietnamese troops and tanks overran a ranger base about 50 miles north of Saigon after an epic siege of nearly 14 months. Government sources said waves of South Vietnamese bombers retaliated soon afterward by leveling the base and striking the Viet Cong headquarters at Loc Ninh about 25 miles farther north.

Atty Gen Rules Against Local Appointments to Board

The State Attorney General ruled the Aiken County Board of Commissioners may not nominate members to the county Board of Registration, since appointments must come from the South Carolina Senate with governor appointment on the Senate advised consent. The ruling also applies to county election commissions and upholds Senator Laughlin's protest of the nominations.

Mock Disaster Set For May 22 In Aiken County

On Wednesday May 22 at 930 a.m. the Local Department of Civil Defense will run a simulated mass casualty exercise involving more than 200 people from county and city agencies to test emergency services. The Schofield campus at Aiken High School serves as the site with about 35 students acting as patients and a chain of responders including Aiken Fire Department Paramedics Teen Town Building doctors and nurses from Aiken County Hospital.
