Belvedere killer seeks release over post conviction delay

Kevin Kenyatta Johnson, a Belvedere man serving two life terms for the 1995 Aiken County killings, asks a judge to free him citing a missed state response deadline in his post conviction relief filing. His May 1 hearing before Judge Thomas W. Cooper will address his bid and claimed legislative time extensions for responses.

Recycling effort cuts area's landfill needs in SC

Aiken County's Solid Waste Division advances recycling under the 1991 act, expanding drop-off centers from 1994 to 1995 and increasing yearly tonnage. In fiscal 1999 the county recycled 45,909 tons. The EPA goal is 3.5 pounds per person per day by June 30, 2005. Cardboard to glass and electronics are among recyclables. centers provide on-site attendants to help residents.

City hikes recreation fees for out of city participants

Aiken City Council approved 12 goals for 2000 2001 including a $10 annual out of city recreation fee and higher rental rates. Non resident class and athletic fees rose from 750 to 1750 for children and from 10 to 20 for adults. The plan also mentions missions at Savannah River Site visits litter program and streetscape renewal on Richland Avenue.

Housing Authority to build new homes in Aiken

Aiken City Council approved designating Busch Homes as a target revitalization area under state grant rules. The plan calls demolition of 60 existing apartments for 44 single family homes, with 18 units to be removed in the first phase and 42 apartments reviewed for tax credits for state assistance.

Lantrip's Oyster Pit Fire Under Investigation

A blaze at Lantrip's Oyster Pit in Aiken County Monday morning is under investigation by the Sheriff's Office. Lt. Michael Frank says no new information has been released. Forensics gathered ashes and samples for SC SLED analysis after 1 am dispatch and rapid fire response.

Firefighters Contain Scene After Wiskey Road Blockade

An operation shut Wiskey Road blocking access and firefighters remained at the scene until at least 6 a.m. More than 25 firefighters responded to the incident.

Census 2000 meets first goal with 61 percent response

Washington reports that 61 percent of US households have completed and mailed the 2000 census forms. Officials aim for 70 percent nationwide, with a $168 million advertising push to boost returns and April 27 labor visits planned for nonresponding households.
