Trains Continue Through Damaged Laurens Street Bridge
Norfolk Southern trains will continue to run below the damaged Laurens Street bridge as repair crews work today. Officials said engineers will be protected by a flagman while work proceeds. The bridge damage stemmed from erosion after a March storm, with the span settled 10 to 12 inches and a concrete beam snapped. The area remains closed to traffic under guard, with trespassing penalties posted. The SCDOT and Federal Highway Administration plan to pursue Emergency Relief funds for the repair cost.
