Robert P. Timmerman has taken early retirement as Graniteville Company president. He will stay on the board and serve as a consultant following a Southeastern Public Service Company announcement after Posner’s acquisition of Graniteville. Timmerman to pursue personal and business interests. comments were not offered.

He holds honorary life memberships in USC Alumni Association and Swint Post 77 American Legion, plus an honorary Doctorate from USC Aiken. Renee Mottram says Timmerman’s reporting line shifts to V Jerome Kaplan as executives report to him.
Washington AP reports a nationwide lenders group says falling mortgage rates spurred a last year housing revival with first timers making up a record 40 percent of sales. The shift was driven by homeowners moving up to larger homes, freeing starter houses. The ULI warned of risks amid the upbeat tone.
Washington AP reports California has the nation's highest housing costs with Los Angeles top ranked. The Los Angeles Long Beach median home price reached about 65 000, nearly double the national median. Other West Coast cities join the top five alongside Washington DC, while Atlanta Columbia Greenville Spartangburg post varied medians and expenses. The US League cites 75 markets from 13 000 loans across 371 savings institutions.
Keith Gilmore a 36 year old Fountain Valley California man was accused by two men Sanchez 32 and an unnamed partner of molesting a child after distributing Bible quotes in a Harrison Idaho park. Gilmore was found hanging from a tree with a noose around his neck and was rescued by authorities.
Aviation Week reports a future shuttle flight will include a Chinese payload specialist. White House and NASA officials held talks with China as Reagan plans a seven day trip to China beginning April 26 and is expected to announce the agreement during the visit.

Aiken City Council approved changes to the Planned Unit Development section of the zoning ordinance. The updates define private roadways as open space and alter population density calculations to count private yards and decks toward open space. W M Sloan urged a straightforward approach during the meeting.
Palmetto Federal Savings and Loan of South Carolina based in Aiken signed a lease purchase for the former Farmers and Merchants operations center at Laurens Street and Park Avenue. Chairman Earle Holley calls the move a million dollar commitment to downtown Aiken with a 10 to 20 year outlook. The association moved in last weekend consolidating checking and savings, accounting, auditing, printing, and data processing for about 65 000 accounts. The center, built in 1980 on the site of the old First Presbyterian Church, retains part of the church structure.
