Two GOP Nominees Emerge In South Carolina Congress Races
The South Carolina GOP nominated two candidates for Congress at Columbia High School. Wayne Whatley, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, faces Democrat James Mann in the fourth district, and Roy Ethridge, a former Anderson Free Press publisher, challenges Democrat W J Dorn in the third district. The convention also backed Thurmond Spence Limehouse and Len Phillips, and adopted a platform calling for school desegregation opposition to busing, open government info laws, and tougher drug penalties. The party criticized the Democratic-led legislature over reapportionment and touted court decisions as aiding Republican gains.
