Singh leads going into last day of turf war

Beasley joins flag marchers in South Carolina

Former governor David Beasley joined Charleston Mayor Riley’s 120 mile Get in Step march from Charleston to Columbia to protest the Confederate flag. Beasley said the controversy hurts the state and the Republican Party while noting he paid a price for his 1996 proposal to move the flag. He stood with Democrats Hodges and Riley at a post rally as about 2,000 attended.

Local groups win Make A Difference Day awards

Two local groups earned honors in the 9th annual Make A Difference Day on Oct 23 1999. ACOLT received a local award for trash cleanup and wildflower planting at the Carolina Bay Nature Reserve, aided by the Aiken County Open Land Trust and groups like Aiken Junior Women’s Club. Henhouse Ministry also earned a late honor for improving a Nursing Care Facility in Swansea.

Road project fate questioned as Bobby Jones Expressway stalls

Officials question when the Bobby Jones Expressway extension from the river to I 20 will occur as the S C Highway Department has bought rights of way and $750000 is spent. Aiken County lacks the estimated 118 to 150 million needed and funding depends on the Infrastructure Bank, now out of funds and not refunded by the Legislature. County proposes a local match and awaits Bank revival. County leaders note other regions secured projects while theirs lags.
