A Belisarius by M. Marmontel was finally returned to the Trenton New Jersey library after 188 years missing. The item highlights curious places books end up and the lighthearted woes of overduereturns in a reader’s reminiscence style.
April 8 marks the 1949 death of 3 year old Kathy Fiscus in an abandoned well. Her tragedy prompted national attention to well hazards and led to laws enforcing improved safety measures. Also noted is Hana Matsuri the Flower Festival and a partial solar eclipse visible in parts of the southern hemisphere.
Sanna Carey of Aiken trains yellow lab Charlie, winner of the 1985 Purina Field Trial Retriever Award on his sixth birthday in Missouri. Carey, a 30 year retriever trainer, travels 1,000 miles weekly and runs up to 12 dogs at her kennel while Charlie has placed in 16 of 21 field trials. The trainer emphasizes love, patience, and organization to develop top dogs and notes the dog’s star status belongs to Charlie.
An April 8 community calendar lists numerous Aiken events and meetings. Activities span from 8:30 p.m. Closed AA meetings at 123 Linden St to 1 p.m. Al-Anon sessions, health screenings, and library hours. The schedule includes USC Aiken astronomy club, local church groups, museum hours, and several public service and hobby group gatherings.
An upcoming I Can Cope series runs on Tuesdays from April 22 to May 27, 6 pm to 9 pm on the first floor HCA Aiken classroom. Designed for cancer patients and their families, it provides information and support with contact details for Pam Jones at HCA Aiken and Mary Ellen Gunter at the American Cancer Society.
