Father fights to return war dead by air and honor
An order change in January shifts U S military mortuary arrivals from commercial flights to charter jets for Iraq and Afghanistan dead. Caskets now land at regional airports, are met by honor guards, and families receive more immediate tributes. John Holley, father of Spc Matthew Holley, helped push the reform after his son’s body was treated as cargo. Kalitta Charters has flown 143 servicemembers home under the new system amid over 3,500 U S deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan.
