Twenty Years of Glass at Savannah River Site
The Defense Waste Processing Facility at Savannah River Site has vitrified high level radioactive waste for over two decades. A 65 ton melter turns sludge and frit into borosilicate glass, immobilizing waste for long term disposal in stainless steel canisters. Since operations began in March 1996, DWPF has poured its 4,000th canister of vitrified waste.

Defense Waste Processing Facility facts and milestones
The Defense Waste Processing Facility at Savannah River Site houses 71,000 cubic yards of concrete and 10,500 tons of reinforcing steel with a 24 inch diameter foundation. It has poured 4,032 of a projected over 8,000 canisters and removed about 58.6 million pounds of waste as of December 31, 2015. SRR operates DWPF under a DOE contract, with about 20 more years of operation and around 4,000 more canisters planned. DOE manager Jack Craig stresses DWPF's crucial role for the DOE, communities, and South Carolina, noting nearly 16 million pounds of molten glass since 1996 and that Melter 2 has poured over 10 million pounds, exceeding design life by more than 10 years. Mark Schmitz, acting SRR president, lauds safety, longevity, and reliability, forecasting continued success over two decades.
