Future Aiken resident to carry Olympic torch

Rick Doran a former New York firefighter of 22 years plans to carry the Olympic torch through San Francisco in memory of fallen colleagues from September 11 2001. His act of heroism was featured by Life magazine and later by major networks. The Dorans plan to relocate to Aiken where they view retirement as near.

Aiken educator Abelle Nivens dies at 91 after 73-year career

Abelle Nivens of Aiken died Friday at 91, ending a 73-year teaching life that began in public schools and included opening the Minnie Palmore House, a small school she started with an old Army barracks in Graniteville. She taught until age 90 and lived to 101, saying she never made money but loved children. Nivens was the youngest of 10, educated at Bettis Academy, and inspired by her mother’s example.

Memphis veterans honor King on 40th anniversary

In Memphis 40th anniversary observances included a morning march by aging sanitation workers and union members to the Lorraine Motel, memorializing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr who was assassinated in 1968.
