Bush seeks to extend Yucca Mountain nuclear waste cap
The Bush administration proposes lifting the 77 000 ton storage cap at Yucca Mountain Nevada to allow as much waste as the site can hold estimated at 132 000 tons and dedicating funds in a waste account to secure financing. The plan would also let federal officials ship waste by rail by pre empting state rules and allow construction of non nuclear parts of the site ahead of an NRC license. Senator Pete Domenici supports the bill while Harry Reid opposes it, saying it is dead on arrival. The project aims a 2020 opening with no interim storage.
