South Carolina pushes Yucca Mountain waste plan
Twenty two South Carolina senators including Aiken County officials urge Congress to endorse Yucca Mountain as a federal high level waste repository, arguing the federal government must dispose of spent fuel from Savannah River Site. Secretary Chu has said Yucca Mountain is no longer an option, leaving about 60 000 tons of used reactor fuel at plants while a new disposal plan is developed. The state delegation seeks action despite legal obligations to accept spent fuel.
