Unemployment Steady at 7.3 Percent in March

The unemployment rate remained at 7.3 percent in March, the highest since July 1985, with 9.2 million unemployed. Payrolls rose weakly by 19,000 in March, following a February gain revised down from 164,000, while retail trade shed 24,000 jobs and manufacturing declined slightly.

Hitchcock Woods Horse Show Returns After Eight-Year Hiatus

After an eight year pause the Hitchcock Woods Horse Show returns in Aiken with a day of hunter and rider competition at the refurbished show ring. Vehicles are allowed for a $5 entry fee and ringside parking and picnic tables are available. The event supports the Save the Woods campaign by the Aiken Hounds and marks a revival of a tradition dating to before World War I.

Ten School Buses Sit Idle In Aiken County CDL Shortage

Ten buses were sidelined as drivers failed the federally required CDL test before April 1. With 15 routes lacking drivers, remaining staff cover two routes per person while substitutes are unavailable. The district aimed to meet the April 1 deadline and restore full service.

Two Drug Kingpins Receive Life Sentences in Federal Term

Gutierrez and Bell labeled as kingpins in Aiken County drug trafficking were sentenced to life in prison by Judge Charles E. Simons Jr. They received 20 year terms on four additional counts with no parole or probation. Forfeiture proceedings on their properties were started.
