Old-fashioned country fair draws Graniteville crowd

About 1,500 people attended the Graniteville Exchange Club Big Event, a first time fair noted for crafts and races. The 10-kilometer run led by Richard Christensen of the Augusta Track Club and the University of Georgia, with 135 runners, drew praise for organization and scenery. Local craftsmen from Graniteville and beyond displayed wood carvings and frames, while students from North Augusta High showcased a Junior Achievement manufacturing venture.

North Augusta Holds Off On Extending Land Use Control

North Augusta officials say they are interested in land use control beyond city boundaries but will not press the matter now. Mayor Henry R. McKenney Jr. noted the goal remains, with state law allowing county and city cooperation under an 11 year old statute to define the extent of jurisdiction. Field Jr. said extending control would let the city regulate development at its entrances, and county officials had prior discussions on the issue.
