Rotarians hosted an Easter Egg Hunt at Virginia Acres Park after a week of rain. The Easter Bunny arrived with 5 000 eggs and a basket of sunshine as children searched the grass for colorful eggs and found stuffed bunny prizes.
The Aiken County Board of Commissioners opened bids for stockade renovation to include a day room toilets showers laundry and storage. Half funding comes from LEAP and the rest from prisoner labor with paper credits. A public dog pound handling responsibility debate followed after a closed session with Dr. J T Hair.
Merchants report strong Easter weekend sales with Franklin Howard of the Berks store noting a 20 to 30 percent rise from last year. Rob Brabham of Edward's confirms solid business Wednesday to Saturday as crowds flock Friday and Saturday. Ron Fowler of White's calls sales much better than last year, while Jimmie Rhoden says pre Easter sales lagged slightly. Crowded streets and busy centers marked the holiday shopping rush.
The United States assembled its biggest air strike force in over three years for planned raids on North Vietnam to counter the Communist offensive across the DMZ. Forecasters expect cloudy skies until Tuesday or Wednesday. North Vietnamese ground pressure slowed but heavier weapons crossed the DMZ as U S fighter bombers and destroyers hit a column of about 50 tanks. Communist activity continued in the central highlands and northwest of Saigon.
US defense officials say the South Vietnamese army is doing pretty well against the new North Vietnamese offensive. They caution the main test is yet to come and dispute that withdrawals from fire-support bases and outposts near the DMZ constitute a serious setback.
Antiwar priest Philip Berrigan found guilty of smuggling a letter out of a federal prison. The Harrisburg Seven jury deadlocked on nine other counts and resumed deliberations, with Judge R Dixon Herman cautioning against stopping the trial due to its importance and cost.
Catholic women in Belfast protested the IRA Provisional wing's rejection of a truce. The demonstrations signal growing Catholic support for considering Britain's peace initiatives including suspending the Protestant provincial government direct rule from London and releasing interned suspects.
President Lanusse said kidnapers of Oberdan Sallustro were arrested but the Fiat Argentina general manager remained missing. Over 5,000 police continued a search for the 56 year old executive seized March 21 by leftist guerrillas.
South Carolina legislators from Charleston to Aiken join a push for a four lane highway from Charleston to Augusta. The plan extends the US 17 widening toward Walterboro and connects to I 20 with a Savannah River bridge, plus a Welcome Center on I 95 near Walterboro.
The Agriculture Department and ERS revise per capita cigarette use, showing Americans aged 18 and up smoked 214 packs in 1967, 198 packs in 1970, and about 203 packs in 1971 with 1972 projections near current levels. Growth in 18–24 age group during 1962–71 influences the estimate.
Partly cloudy skies and a chance of rain forecast for tomorrow. Lows around 40s tonight with highs in the 70s tomorrow. A slow warming trend through Wednesday to Friday builds toward the Masters Tournament in Augusta with highs near 70 by midweek and low 70s by Friday.
Mrs. Glenda Meyers of Gloverville is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill after allegedly shooting her husband Royal Meyers in the head. The incident occurred Friday at 1 10 am at the Meyers home. He is in University Hospital with a fractured skull. Also charged were three North Augusta men in an assault on Susan Langston.
A public meeting of the Aiken County Legislative Delegation is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Health Department. The North Augusta Advisory Council discusses action by the Aiken County Hospital Board of Trustees, with presentations from Jesse McKimurray and Jim Hammond of MSAs, and requests for Family Court assistance by Judge Howard Williamson and Peggy Pringle. Al Brodie leads discussion on Training School and Evaluation Center needs.
The Thunderbirds US Air Force Demonstration Squadron will perform in Aiken on May 7 at 3 p.m. Five jets will dive and sweep through the sky with red white and blue markings. Sponsors include Major Dean Larsen and Eagle Aviation owner Michael Laughlin.
