Warning system planned for lower Saluda River surges
South Carolina Electric & Gas will post online and by phone alerts before upstream hydropower releases cause rapid water rises on the 10 mile lower Saluda River. Since 1997 eight deaths have occurred in surges, with rescues of others on large boulders. Critics say the plan falls short of full safety measures.
