The Aiken County Board of Education met in executive session for two hours and 10 minutes to discuss personnel matters. Chairman Robert H. Slay indicated potential further personnel discussions after the session.
A group of boys tested the new radar speed sign in front of Aiken High School and North Aiken Elementary by sprinting past it yesterday. No reports of tickets or enforcement were filed.
Aiken County Council heard proposals from Sue Roe’s advisory panel to use parts of the north end of Aiken Elementary School property for about 79 parking spaces at a cost of 26000 dollars, and park area improvements across from the Judicial Center at 16000 dollars for about 28 spaces.
Aiken data show 83 of 120 intersection crashes from July to February occurred on the S C 118 bypass Whiskey Road Richland Avenue and York Street. The most dangerous pair was York and the bypass with 22 crashes. Lawton cites failure to yield and inattention as major causes.
Lt. Gov. Michael Daniel spoke at Aiken Technical College outlining proposed reforms to upgrade K12 and higher education. He urged career ladders for teachers, a Governor's School for math and science, stronger compulsory attendance enforcement, reform of school boards, and closer university industry ties to retrain workers and boost entrepreneurship.
At a Jackson public hearing the town council agreed to set aside the proposed business license ordinance and form a committee of merchants and council members to study revisions and draft a new equitable ordinance if needed. The group, led by Ellis of the Merchants & Landowners, named 12 local business people to serve on the panel.
Ridge Spring aims to connect its water system to Edgefield County to secure steady supply and improve quality for Ward. The plan, backed by Saluda County and the Ridge Spring Water Commission, envisions a 6.2 mile link east of Johnston with Ridge Spring purchasing Edgefield water via a master meter for local distribution.
Georgia-Pacific expands its Aiken facility to add 40,000 square feet and upgrade production lines for disposable diapers and moist towelettes. Completion is targeted for early September with full production by mid month. staffing levels are not expected to change.
