Trust suit looms over Mattie Hall estate aid

In 1961 Mattie Chafee Hall left most of her estate to aid the indigent through Aiken County Hospital which closed this year. The fund is 1 078 108.68 dollars and may pass to Julian Salley and his sister Eulalie Rutledge if the trust fails. County leaders argue funds should aid the indigent of Aiken County and not the hospital. Legal action awaits final accounts and interpretation of the will signed in 1960.

Carter Jet Trips Saved State Money in 1972

Georgia officials say a 1972 trip by Governor Jimmy Carter on a Lockheed Georgia plane was not unusual and was paid for by the company. Coca Cola also says Carter rode on its jets to governors conferences, all for state business.

Information On Marine Withheld

Marine investigators say local Texas officials withheld information that would have disqualified the enlistment of Pvt Lynn McClure of Lufkin. McClure died after head injuries in training, prompting claims by Rep Charles Wilson that he was improperly recruited due to mental retardation and prior arrests. An Aiken County couple, Mr and Mrs L W Clark of 3421 Trolleyline Road, were killed when their car veered from SC 215 and struck a tree near Kitchens Mill at about 8 15 p m. The driver was identified as Mrs Clark and the incident occurred on a straight highway stretch twelve miles from Aiken.

Commission Candidate Larry Kelly Dies at 28

Larry Kelly, 28, a candidate for the County Commission, died last night around 7 pm at Aiken Community Hospital. A native of Aiken County, he was confined to a wheelchair, a USC journalism graduate residing in Warrenville, and a freelance writer with bylines in The Aiken Standard The Augusta Chronicle and The State. He faced Homer L. McGee in the June 8 Democratic primary for District No Six. His widow is Carol Tweedy of North Augusta.

Center to Continue Answering Fire Calls

The Center Fire District Board of Commissioners released a statement that fire protection will continue to be provided by the former district until further court orders. Chairman GV Mundy said trucks will respond to calls as long as volunteers and fuel are available, and that authorities will remain with the commissioners until the court instructs otherwise.
