Aiken experiences a brief chilly spell as temperatures dip near freezing overnight. The forecast calls for a mid 60s high and lower 30s low today, then a warmer Wednesday with highs near 70 and lows around 40. Spring should return Thursday with highs in the upper 70s and a low near 60.
Republican candidates Bob Goldman and Fay Hatcher faced off in a District 1 runoff to determine who meets Democrat Kathy Rawls in the May 6 general election. Polls opened at 7 a.m. and closed at 7 p.m. in 15 precincts with results to be tallied at the Aiken County Council building. The seat became vacant Jan 1 after Judith Warner resigned as registrar of mesne conveyance. The winner serves about 18 months of an unexpired term.

The agenda also includes selling about 33 acres in Sage Mill Industrial Park to Avondale Mills for a 540,000 land deal at roughly 1,200 per acre and a wastewater project contract at the Savannah River Research Dam.
Maryland firm GTS Duratek halted its DuraMelter 5000 at the Savannah River Site after workers saw unusually fast wear on bricks inside the melter. The $7 million unit had run since October under a $14 million fixed-price DOE contract to vitrify 660,000 gallons of waste to glass. No danger to workers or public. 100,000 gallons processed so far.

Governor David Beasley signed the measure creating a Statehouse monument to Strom Thurmond and a law naming the Folk Heritage Award after late state Rep. Jean Harris.
