Aiken County and its cities near a final settlement on dual taxation after years of dispute. If the joint committee plan holds, county homeowners would pay about six dollars more for a 50000 dollar house while residents in towns would save about twenty dollars annually.

Aiken School District seeks volunteers for a five day training program starting Monday January 16 from 830 a m to noon. Graduates become certified tutors assigned to students for the semester with teacher supervision. No degree required.

Aiken jury finds 50 anti nuclear protesters guilty

Aiken County jury of six deliberated about half an hour before convicting 50 anti nuclear demonstrators of disobeying police orders to clear a road to the Savannah River Plant. Magistrate Mat Meek fined each by 100 dollars or 11 days in jail after arrests on October 24 where 79 protesters blocked two access roads to the plutonium and tritium producing facility.

Aiken city council on first reading approves a plan to restore the historic Willcox Hotel. Councilman Skipper Perry spoke with representatives from Saint Lon and others, outlining steps and hoped timelines for the project.
