A wartime letter from Lloyd Gordon dated September 1918 recounts travel through northern Vermont to Canada, describes cold weather and scenery, and urges his parents to stay brave. He expresses duty to fight Germans, asks care for his wife and baby, and hopes to return. Also mentions Duroc bears for sale and a church ice cream sale on September 25.
Frank Riner offers ten good male pigs and twenty fine gilts for sale. Buyers should act quickly to secure livestock.
Mrs. H. C. Epperson reports a letter from Mrs. J. F. Coombs stating the Red Cross Shop will not open on the 1st due to government handling of hospital garment quotas. Bath robes bed shirts pajamas and operating gowns are cited. The Lebanon shop will open in the afternoons only on Thursday and Saturday to receive knitted garments or provide information until a September quota arrives.
Fred Riner writes on August 7 1918 from Camp Haitean describing an upcoming departure for the United States and a recent voyage. He mentions not being seasick though several fellows were, notes good marines treatment, and mentions inexpensive fruit with bananas at one cent each.
August 10 1918 letter recounts rough seas on first voyage with Marines in Port au Prince Haiti. He notes wet clothes from spray, meals from the hatchway, humor amid danger, longing for France, and warnings about local diseases. He mentions good food medical care frequent moving pictures and a cheap washing service. He hopes to transfer as a graduate chemist if possible and aims to stay focused until the war ends.
Bert Nisley, hospitalized in France with a shoulder wound from shrapnel, wrote to his parents Mr and Mrs Dave Nisley. He was the first to volunteer from his company to cross and the first Advance boy wounded in this conflict. Attendees at a Hall meeting included Mr and Mrs Dave McClellan, Mr and Mrs A H Yager, and others. Bro Kelley spoke.
Frank and Emmett Riner toured Miller Park Farm at Darlington where farmer Miller feeds 1750 hogs slated for market in October.
The Food Administration outlines rules on flour substitutes and packaging limits, requiring one pound of substitutes with four pounds of wheat flour when cereals other than wheat fall below 20 percent. Pancake flour with substitutes needs a Washington permit, and victory flours require internal revenue licenses. Milling inspections continue to ensure substitute levels. Sugar certificate expirations prompt new quarterly statements for hotels, restaurants, bakeries, and retailers. New corn milling grades set moisture and fat ranges, with stricter limits for moisture up to 13 percent and fat up to 2 percent. No extra sugar for wine making or sacramental use will be allowed. pastors are asked to collect sugar contributions from parishioners for sacramental wine.
The Advance Masonic event featured Ivory Tolle of Lebanon guiding three candidates for Master Mason’s degree in an afternoon session with Jamestown and Advance brothers. Thorntown lodge led by C C Lafollette hosted 30 members and one candidate that night. Thorn town Lodge’s active work impressed as Masons enjoyed a 70-person supper organized by wives at the Community Building followed by a lively program, marking it as the era’s most elaborate local Masonic gathering.
