Local items report new front on the Epperson Whitsett blacksmith shop and several residents visiting relatives and attending events. Activities include Halloween social at Jamestown with Japanese lanterns, a basketball game lineup in Russellville against Advance, and a Boy Scout style supper planned by the Rebeccah Lodge in Advance.
Advance Christian Church records show Sunday School attendance 102 last Sunday with 292 in collection and 37 Bibles. Willing Workers meet first Saturday afternoon monthly. Sunday School every Sunday at 10. Preaching services on the second and fourth Sundays, morning and evening.
A birthday and wedding celebration occurred at Jerry Smith and his wife’s home Sunday. Mrs Smith’s birthday was Saturday and Mr Smith’s birthday was Monday, and Sunday marked their thirty seventh wedding anniversary. Fifty two friends arrived with buckets to surprise them.
October showed scarce Indian summer days with only seven clear days and fifteen partly cloudy days. The mean high reached 54.94 degrees, max 89 on the tenth, rain fell on eleven days totaling 3.60 inches, and light frosts occurred on several dates with snow totaling about a quarter inch. Snow began October 21 and winds came from the southwest.
Ike Shelley and wife attended a birthday surprise for Jerry Smith in Advance Sanday along with M. M. Edrington building a shed near his barn. Cud McClaine and family from west of Advance dined with O. A McClaine and family Sunday. Mrs. Tom DeBard from Edmore Michigan arrived for several weeks with her father R. D. Billingsly. Omer McClain lost a horse Wednesday.
Notice shows second class mail status entered March 3 at Advance Indiana post office under the act of March 3 1879. Includes filing reference and official stamping for mail matter processing.
Late in the afternoon guests left the gathering after enjoying a plentiful meal. Fifty two attendees finished their plates and still had ample food to spare, concluding the celebration with warm wishes for future similar events.
A double funeral was held at eleven o'clock for Phillip Feather and his daughter at their New Ross home. Feather died Monday afternoon after two years of illness. his daughter, 22, suffered from dropsy for months. Mrs. Morrison, wife of a local man, died Sunday at her father's home. she leaves two infant children. The Feathers family, once of New Ross, was well known. Mrs Morrison studied at New Ross and married there.
Guests gathered at his home on Sunday for a family reunion. Attendees included W. H Parr and family, Ralph Puoyater and wife, C. C Debard and family of Lebanon, M. M. Edrington and family, S.Z Billingsly and family, R M. Billingsly of Valparaiso, Nova Bilingsly, Dorsy Butler and family, Roy Kibtey and family of James town, Carl Ferguson and family near Dover, Mrs. Jene DeBard and three sons of Edmore Michigan. They brought baskets and planned to meet again next year.
Due to illness of Walter Cory a key witness in the damage suit brought by Peter Hurt against B F Jones and others, the case is continued from next Monday to December 22. Cory had appendectomy surgery and his wife is also ill. Trial was set before Judge Osboro in Indianapolis.
The county commissioner on Tuesday afternoon awarded two gravel road projects to Pat Shahan. The Grimes road in Sugar Creek township will cost 4600 dollars and the Smith road in Perry township 5000 dollars.
Open hunting seasons bring many hunters onto private lands who shoot game on others property. Beyond the wounded game, careless shots threaten stock and cause farmers to absorb losses for each trespass. The author notes repeated incidents and suggests hunting harm adds financial burden equal to the value of the game killed.
