East Christian Church invites the community to hear Dr W P Minton of Dayton Ohio next Wednesday at eleven. He is Foreign Mission Secretary for the Christian Church and will also lecture stereoptically at Old Union Saturday night and Sunday. An offering for Foreign Missions will be taken at each service.
Local residents and guests are listed as spending weekends with relatives in Hoopeston Indianapolis Jamestown and nearby towns. Families include Sterretts Harshbargers Reeds McClains McCabe Grahams and Spohrs. A large group attended the Lebanon basketball tournament, with several households hosting weekend guests.
Berean class of the North Christian church met Friday night with a good turnout. A fine program followed by refreshments of candy and angels prepared by ten ladies, chaired by Mrs. Zoda Welden. Officers for the year include President Mrs. Versa Reese, Secretary Mrs. Hazel Waters, and Mrs. Grace Caldwell.
Basil Davis aged 28 died in Anapolis at his mother’s home Saturday. Body brought to sister Mrs Sam Pratt’s home in Jamestown Sunday. Funeral held Monday afternoon at 2:00 in charge of Ora McDaniel.
March 11 Boone county Pythians gathered in Advance at the Red Men wigwam with Carl Mitchell, secretary for the state, as principal speaker. Delegations from Ladoga, Mace, New Ross and Shannondale attended. Thorn town led with the largest group. J F Gregory promotes a Pyrthian home in Lebanon. Refreshments of pie, sandwiches and coffee were served.
Mr and Mrs Elisha Reese hosted a birthday party for their son Earl last Thursday night with games music and ice cream cake. Attendees included Esther and Edith Morri son Genevieve Clifton Marjorie Martin Georgia Brindle Lucille Yager Zora Brindle Merle Station Lawrence Whitecotton Russell White Searle Lafoliette Livings Brindle Jumius Clifton Noel Brindle and Artie Clifton with Dale and George Brindle John. Coach Burrins Advance basketball team won 23 9 over Whitestown 21 13 vs Zionsville and 24 20 vs Lebanon advancing to the Regional Tournament at Frankfort. The school celebrated the victory with a large booster following and plans to play Clayton at 2 PM Saturday.
A tornado swept across Boone County damaging Jamestown and surrounding farms. Homes, barns, and outbuildings were destroyed or unroofed. several people narrowly escaped injury. The storm damaged the Ray Rogers and Smith farms near Jamestown and caused debris across roads and wires downed, isolating Jamestown briefly.
Mrs. J W Shumate of Lebanon displays three works at the Chicago Hoosier Salon promoted by Indiana Daughters in Chicago. La Fountain St Paul du Var, reproduced in the Chicago Evening Post art issue, is noted as the sole Indiana entry. Other works include The Top of the Wall and The Road To St Jeanette. La Fountain St Paul du Var was painted during a winter France visit and depicts the ancient fountain used by local women washing baskets. A concert by the 139th Field Artillery Band of Lebanon is set for North Christian Church next Sunday at 2:30 pm. the band, organized July 1924, features ex-service members and will perform at Speedway races and the State Fair. Tickets for the Regional Tournament total 125 sold, with a few left at Burrin's Drug Store.
W H VanDeusen, a self described divine healer, has attracted attention since Sunday for claims of miracles among Lebanon's sick and blind. He says he cured two near blind Lebanon men by the power of Jesus name and laying on of hands. He appears daily in courthouse corridors for audiences and holds services at the mission on Noble and South Meridian streets each night. he charges no fees.
A line of rain hail and wind storms swept Indiana causing injuries and heavy property damage. A tornado near Rochester injured several and caused about 75000 dollars in losses. Western Vigo and Edgar counties reported 150000 to 200000 dollars in damage. Kosciusko county saw barns leveled with 30000 to 40000 dollars in losses. Telephones and telegraph lines were down and transportation halted. The storm cooled sharply with expectations of freezing weather today and tonight.
The Junior High presents an operetta at the Community Building tonight with lively songs and colorful costumes. Local families are invited to attend and support student performers in this community arts event.
The junior high operetta is set for Thursday evening March 12 at the Community Building. The senior class play follows on Friday March 27 with high expectations for an excellent performance. The baccalaureate sermon will be preached by Rev. E C Geeding on Sunday evening April 19. Commencement at the high school is planned for Saturday evening April 25 with Rev. Charles Whitman of Greensburg delivering the address.
Indiana Governor Jackson faces 117 bills approved by the 74th General Assembly before adjournment. The measures have not yet reached him and he has until Saturday to decide whether to sign or veto them, potentially delivering a pocket veto if he withholds. The governor is momentarily away at his farm and expected to return soon.
A local bread trial at Advance Bakery drew mixed reviews as tasters praised crust and aroma but found texture and flavor lacking compared with rival loaves. Several testers plan to seek other options for daily bread while others remain hopeful for refinements.
