The Lebanon Pioneer recalls John P. Servies building a catsup factory at Advance. He planned to hire eight to ten workers and run a large-scale operation, with plans to purchase ripe tomatoes and pay top prices. The piece recalls Uncle John’s factory life in a former barn behind Wm Caldwell’s residence.
The Advance locals announce a Friday night free ice cream festival at the Advance Wigwam featuring Rei Men and Pocahontas drill teams with a prize from the Haymakers for the team making the fewest mistakes. Also noted are local visits and family gatherings, including the Wall Reunion near Thorntown, and various residents’ Sunday and weekday activities.
Mr and Mrs Dr O A Nelson Jene Evelynn McCollum and Miss Jane Brown were in Indianapolis. Studebaker Corp South Bend completed a 1 million dollar body plant and started a 2 million dollar foundry. West Baden Hotel will build a 500 thousand dollar bath house. Agriculture Department estimates a wheat shortage of 46.6 million bushels versus last year.
Harvey Jones begins direct mail from James town to Advance at 8 30 a.m. with Post Office Department cooperation noted. Community notes report school expansion at Franklin Masonic Home, local visits, and various social items.
Beginning Aug 1 Harvey M Jones will make two daily mail round trips between Jamestown and Advance with departures from Advance at 8 55 a m and Jamestown at 2 20 a m and Advance at 3 00 p m All morning dispatches must be in by 8 00 and afternoon by 2 20 Carrie Beaver carries the mail EB Jones of Anderson visited Morrison family Edith Morrison spending time with grandparents at New Danville Mr and Mrs Arden Waters bought a home in Danville NL nine two miles from courthouse on 12 acres and are now located there
J. H. Leddy and Mrs. Leedy walked from Orlando to Knightstown in a 5000 mile trek. Leddy pushed the loaded wheel barrow while Mrs. Leedy and their two children rode as passengers. The painter sold postcard pictures along the way before continuing to Darlington on the Ben-Hur highway.
Attendance at Sunday School is 105. The pastor will lead a Revelation study at the church on Tuesday and Friday nights for the next several days. The Junior Missionary society plans a weiner roast at the next meeting. E C Geeding has been called as pastor starting September 1. A special diploma service for the teacher training class is likely.
Mrs. J. A. Wyatt of Valley Station Ky, mother of our pastor, died July 19. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon, of which she was a devoted member. The church held 10:00 Bible School 11:00 Preaching on The Preacher's Crown and 8:00 Evening Worship on Things Natural and Spiritual.
Carl Debard returned home from the city for the weekend. Donna Shanahan and daughter Marie and Hazel visited John Lane and his sisters near Ladoga as he remains ill. The threshing began Monday and wheat crops look good. Jess Ross and family visited Callie Ross’s family last Thursday. Robert Shaw and Oakel Bean were at Memorial Park in Lebanon Sunday. Will Debard and family and Lee Shaw and wife were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Broshar Sunday. Visitors to James Bean and wife Sunday included Herald Bennett and family of Indianapolis, James Meadows and wife of near Lebanon, Chas Bean and family, Mr. and Mrs. Basil Wright, Mrs. Mariam Wright, and Bruce Pickring and family.
Miss Mildred Peterson a New Ross resident and bookkeeper for the Pierson Hollowell hardwood Lumber Co was robbed Sunday night in her office at 411 East Sixteenth Street Indianapolis The robber described as well dressed with a deep pleasant voice took $5 and left the purse contents behind Police and Sgt Allison responded to the call and investigated after the incident
