Publication of a 1828 letter from Henry Clay to Dr. Pindall of Kentucky defends Burr's conduct in earlier prosecutions, denies charges of collusion, and recounts Burr related legal actions and personal views. Burr asserts no intent to dissolve the Union, disputes Downing’s affidavit, and explains Burr-Clay relations.
Gov Cass Capt Kinsey and Maj Forsyth arrived in New York with fifteen Winnebago chiefs on the way to Washington. They planned theater and fortification visits to show the Indians the country's resources while in New York. The note also reports Illinois Governor Edwards warning Indians in that state not to pass through except on business with a flag and threats action if not. It mentions near boundary talks and Dutch king prospects as part of wider European settlement discussions.
Reports describe animals swimming rivers a mile to a mile and a half wide and being killed by bogs and sportsmen at landings. A child dies after clothes catch fire in Fredericksburg Virginia, another burns severely in Albany, and a Berlin paper notes Mecklenburgh aims to improve Jewish civil rights with new ordinances.
Reports from Alabama describe an ir Serpent about 20 feet long and three feet broad. Witnesses portray its motion as gentle and undulating, a graceful yet terrible sight. The Sea Serpent’s long absence from local waters is said to be ended.
This morning a remarkable darkness spread over Montreal, with a saffron sky akin to the 1819 dark day. Lights were needed in the Court House and other public offices as the gloom persisted briefly before clearing to a dull rainy October sky.
