A ballad by Mrs Emma C Embury tells of a maiden at a busy wheel who loves with a lively heart and believes love will endure. A year later the same girl wears sorrowful eyes as she recalls how charm faded and her life was wasted by the sweetness of a love that lasted but a day.
The Portland Bulletin accuses many claiming to aid public welfare of pursuing personal gain. It says politicians pretend to buy land and build squares from public spirit while profits go to themselves and private dwellings suffer. Public benefit is sacrificed for convenience and profit.
