In a Civil War vignette Lucy Dudley hides soldiers in her home and guides Union fighters through danger. She shields retreating comrades, supports wounded, and inspires with steadfast resolve amid shooting and raid, while Zagonyi’s troop presses toward Springfield.
On October 21 a small scene unfolded near a Springfield Missouri film house as Lucy Dudley and two other women faced a dozen armed Confederate raiders led by Bill Armstrong. The men demanded surrender, but Lucy and the others stood firm while memories of a husband killed for his beliefs haunted the gathering.
The tale recalls how Papirius silenced his mother’s curiosity about a senate debate by claiming they discussed whether Rome should allow two wives or two husbands for men or women. A mob of wives demanded access, but Papirius explained his restraint, sparking the rule that only Papirius may enter the senate. The text also critiques bigotry and public speech through the lens of John Foster.
A long comic tale recalls a year or two ago when two men and a wife schemes around a “crayther” substitute to hide their drink. The plan unravels with a prank that ends in laughter and a soaked floor. A neighboring farmer muses on happiness and faith, noting his steady simple life and a wish for contentment.
A colorful collage of orations and vignettes from Civil War era pages, including a ship’s voyage metaphor, a New York Observer anecdote about vanity and virtue, recruiting scenes in Buffalo and Detroit style, humorous sketches about cabbage dinners and barbers, a dramatic pirate scene, and accounts of enlistment fervor, mock trials, and wartime social tales with Local color and moral quips.
The United States Railroad and Mining Register notes Pennsylvania leads the eastern states in wheat production, surpassing New Jersey New York and New England. Census 1860 figures cited show total eastern states at 11 521 000 bushels with Pennsylvania contributing a substantial share.
Reports from Tate Heglish papers describe M. Glaisher reaching a height of five miles and three quarters in a balloon, with barometric readings near 10.9 inches, and a perilous moment as vision faded before a higher ascent by Mr Cogeswell. Descent occurred without accident. Pigeons released at four miles died on impact. Also notes on 1862 crop yields and a humorous squintnut anecdote from the Boston Common.
