An 1799 Fairfax County court house election scene in Alexandria drew thousands as General Washington cast his vote amid anxious crowds. Witnesses recount his ascent denied by steps, a peaceful vote, and a dramatic moment when he addressed the regalia while supporters and onlookers urged stability and patriotic resolve. The sermon by Rev Breskourdee framed the event as a test of constitutional fidelity and public virtue.
