The 18th ascent on July 4 from Castle Garden saw Mr Robertson lift at 4 44 pm amid large crowds in the Garden Battery and ships. He released ballast, rose for about 15 minutes, passed above the clouds, crossed toward Manhattan, then drifted westward over the East River. After several descents and renewed ascents near the ocean he landed safely on Mr Morris’s farm near Newtown LK, returning to Castle Garden by nine. He noted clear weather for this ascent, unlike previous trips. The crowd’s cheers contrasted with cannon fire on Long Island which unsettled the balloon at times.
A correspondent describes the last hours of Gen. Lafayette with distressing symptoms. An apparent relief occurred on Monday but by midnight the fever and chest oppression intensified. A nurse applied a poultice to the chest and the general questioned its purpose before requesting continued care.
