A cluttered Gettysburg ad highlights Swan M. Swan offering fresh groceries such as flour sugar coffee and syrups at low prices. It promotes general wares including crockery lamps and glassware with a focus on value and local delivery to Washington and Chambersburg streets.
An 1866 notice advertises a forwarding and commission business continuing at the old corner of Washington and Railroad Streets. It promises high prices for flour and grain, a broad grocery selection, and regular freight cars to Baltimore with arrangements to convey freight. Also markets Nab goods from nearby merchants and notes several local shops expanding their offerings and services.
A sea tale recounts a vessel attacked by terriGe hurricane mid Atlantic and the captain praying with the crew under Berkel Hay Glasgow for sailors in distress. A later tale describes a widow selling then buying back her house, a marching joke about General Hood and Nashville, wool testing, horse slaughter in Prussia, Boston savings bank record deposits, and miscellaneous maxims and anecdotes.
The readable lines evoke a winter mood with references to nature, storms, and a distant heroic choir. Phrases mention a winter wedding, shore imagery, and “God's great crowded glary on thy mountain” contributing a dramatic, archaic tone. The text appears as fragmented poetry with irregular capitalization and misspellings.
The new Chief Magistrate of Pennsylvania speaks in gratitude to the people and Almighty God. He recalls the Civil War, asserts Pennsylvania’s pivotal role, honors soldiers and orphans, urges education reform, and argues for protective tariffs to foster home industry and state finances. He stresses military readiness, veterans, and prudent budgeting for the Commonwealth.
