A dramatic 19th century scene recounts a soldiers heroic rescue on the St Lawrence between Montreal and St Helens. Sergeant Neill crosses shifting ice to save a child, guiding her downriver for six miles until a canoe reaches them. They are saved and returned to shore, while the regiment continues. Also included is a note on consumption among women, blaming indoor life and tight dress for chest compression and frailty, urging healthier fashion and behavior.
The column recounts the rise of a French immigrant who started with 400 francs, became a printer apprentice, and ascended to wealth while serving as a Louisiana judge and brick-yard partner. A powder house in Providence belonging to Messrs Storey Wood and Veder containing about sixty keys of powder was set on fire by an incendiary. The dwelling was near the bridge, causing Haton’s mansion to sustain damage while trees and fences were blown down. An obsolete school and curious arithmetic anecdote follow, including a Flemish teacher’s arrival in Morland in 1565 and a price for starch instruction.
