Great Chester Flood Destroys Bridges and Dwellings
A severe flood swept through Philadelphia area and Chester Creek region on Sunday, flooding basements and destroying bridges and factory buildings. The storm caused widespread damage from Darby to Ridley and Chester Creeks with several lives lost, bridges carried away, and property losses mounting. Local reports describe collapsed buildings, prostrated fences, and toppled walls across multiple neighborhoods, including the Philadelphia Gas Works, Phenix Distillery area, and nearby mills and factories.
