The William Nelson, with about 448 emigrants and 30 crew, caught fire from tar and burned after an onboard panic. Passengers crowded lifeboats, many capsized, several saved by crew and other ships. The Lafayette, Imari, Mercury, and Lafayette again rescued survivors. 43 aboard, including 5 women and 5 children, survived. The captain and crew faced extreme peril as the ship sank two hours after the fire began.
