County Superintendent H Milton Roth continues annual school inspections across the county. He outlines the State Department course in agriculture for seventh grade, explains it to teachers, and invites Gettsburg visitors to his office Saturdays for details. Also notes distribution of 1911 reports and Hand Book, corn club planning, and autumn institute week attractions including Mindy lecture Iroquois Indian Orchestra English comedy David Garrick Welsh Prize Chorus and a fourteen-voice chorus.
Mrs Katie Deveney sprained her ankle and cannot lie about. Mrs M Slinghoff and Mrs Robert were guests of Landis Swope and wife of Bonneauville Sunday. Robert Littel and family visited his daughter Mrs Edweard Parr on Sunday. Master Arthys Boyd is ill but improving. Miss Estella Lentz and friend were guests of Miss Eva Shusly Sunday evening.
Nathan C. Schaeffer announces Arbor Day in Pennsylvania on October 25 urging teachers pupils and citizens to plant trees and engage in exercises that foster appreciation and preservation of forests. He emphasizes attention to the chestnut tree and its preservation.

Edward Bishop and family of Hanover visited John A. Bishop in Harney. Mr and Mrs George Shriner spent Sunday with their daughter in Littlentown. Lawrence Myers of Arendtsville visited C. E. Myers. Ralph and John Witherow of New York visiting parents. Grangers picnic at Williams Grove drew many locals. St Pauls Lutheran will not hold services until Sept 22. M R Snider improved his farm with a large cement hog pen. Edward Forney bought a new engine. Oma Merchey Alma Fox and friends visited Gettysburg. Walter Wilt and M Koons from Taneytown visited Harney. Lincoln Witherow and sons attended Charles Witherow’s Taneytown wedding.
John F. Houck made a business trip to Harrisburg on Friday. Misses Mary and Laura Lupp of Biglerville visited their mother Mrs. Jennie Lupp. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Haverstick visited H. R. Houck and family of Biglerville. Mervin Slaybaugh and daughters attended the funeral of his father Howard Slaybaugh of Centre Mills. Ethel Weigle left to attend Shippensburg normal school. Breams of Gardners Station visited W. S. Houck and family. Bessie Funt on the sick list. E. D. Kemper of Littlestown spent Sunday with relatives near Josyn. Grace Weigle of Flora Dale visited her parents. John F. Houck and Harvey S. Weidner leave to resume studies at Gettysburg College.
Rev H G Lippincott returns from New Jersey to lead Methodist church meetings this week including Sunday services. Musselman Brothers discuss 1913 canning factory plans with residents near town during the noon hour. Pauline Ferry visits Miss Pearl Plank at Brookside. Mrs John Biesecker travels to Harrisburg for medical treatment. Families and friends visit widely. new steel roof on Linn and Biggs flour mill. Ira Walter buys a 1912 Ford. Apple packing begins with first shipments by Sheely Brothers.
Liberty Hall September visit brings many from Maryland and local towns to the Dobel residence. Attendees include Luther Munshower and family, Warthen and family, John Dobel and son Marshal, Frank Topper, Michael Glacken, Stabley, Rose and children, and several young visitors. Mrs Susan Carburgh hosted guests. Miss Grace Plank plans to teach in York this winter.
Off year for apples leaves local yield about half of last year while abroad buyers are in town. Farmer M F Carbaugh reports eight bushels from a potato plot last year versus thirty five this year. A parade of visitors includes Mrs George L Kime of Nachusa Illinois and sisters Mrs Jacob Mowery and Mrs William E Kapp of Biglerville, plus relatives in town.
Robert Shall threshes 16 acres for 840 bushels of oats. William Cullison shoots a 4 feet 4 1/2 inch chicken hawk. Potatoes reported good. A two pound potato seen in E J Suacher’s scales. Ethel and Rosalie Cole attend Arendtsville High School while boarding there. Mandy Rider and nieces Estella and Gertrude Rider from Philadelphia visit Mrs Annie Sherb. Hottest weather last week followed by opening of schools with good attendance. Mrs Mortos Shadle and daughters Anna and Philomena of York stay with John F. Cole.

Winfred and Donald Smith left for Gettysburg to attend college. Mrs Gertrude Sanderson and Harold of Baltimore and Miss Carrie Smyers of Pittsburgh visited George Smyers and family.

Fred Nintle and Ruth visited John and Mrs Kauffman Fayetteville RD 2. William Schuyler and daughter from Orreanns spent Sunday with John J Kint family.
Aspers Mr and Mrs John E Reed and daughters Laura and Pearl spent Friday afternoon in Gettysburg. Elmer Bigham of Iron Springs visited his brother in law John F Reed and family over Sunday. Miss Lizzie Cashman of New Chester and Miss Ellen Biggeal spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs John E Reed. Miss Della Mansberger of Middletown is staying with her brother C F Mansberger. Mrs William Baltzley visits her daughter Mrs Charles Ditzler and family.
Lowisa M Shanefelter died Monday at her niece Sophia Leek’s home in Baltimore aged 71 years 5 months and 20 days. Born March 12 1841 in Gourmany township she belonged to the Shanefester family that emigrated to the United States about 1783 and settled in Berks county. She lived with her brother William Shanefeller in McSherrystown for years and went to Catonsville private sanitarium about a year ago. She is survived by brothers William F Pius M Mylesius E and sister Catharine Strock.

State Highway crews are grading breakers and replacing water pipes on the road west of town while residents note the work near Gettysburg.
New Chester reports a busy week with William Moul and family from New Oxford visiting David Cooley and family. Elizabeth Baker visited East Berlin friends. G F Trimmer adds a new porch. Waltman family visits from Glyndon and Gettysburg. March and Earhart visits Read ing friends. Various locals, health notes, and family visits round out the week.
In Abbottstown on September 18 corn cutting continues. A birthday party honored Misa Mary Ida Hoke on her sixth birthday. P.S. Trimmer and wife from York visited Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Wolt. Mrs. Henry M. Berkheimer celebrated her sixty sixth birthday with relatives from Gettysburg York and nearby. Mr. and Mrs. S. Bucher of Philadelphia stayed with Dr. and Mrs. W. F. Hollinger. Prof Haar of Abbottstown was named principal of Codorus Township High School at Glenville, with former principal Miller taking a new post in South Amboy New Jersey. The school opened Monday.
A. K Bupp will present a free lecture Sunday at 3 o clock in the Wizard Theatre. The subject is the Kingdom of Heaven.
