Western Maryland engines derailed at Highfield wreck
Two Western Maryland freight engines 630 and U17 were derailed near Highfield on Friday while running light. Fireman G E Fauth was buried under the engine but survived, while crews escaped with minor injuries. One engine overturned, the other slid into a ditch, both buried in mud as wrecking crews prepared at Hagerstown and Union Bridge. Passenger service remained unaffected.

Policeman Arrests Mother In Cigarette Case In Chambersburg
Chief of Police Augustus Klenzing arrested his mother Friday morning on a charge of selling cigarettes to a minor. She was among twenty five tobacconists and grocers held for a hearing after complaints of street smoking. Investigations with the district attorney and burgess named twenty five boys aged 10 to 21 leading to charges against local firms for selling to youths under 21.

Heavy rainfall floods Conewago Creek and surrounding area
The weather observer set a new rainfall record on Sunday as Conewago Creek rose higher than during the Johnstown flood. Marsh Creek surged rapidly and nearly reached its flood peak, while Rock Creek and nearby streams ran like rivers. Bridges and four logs were swept away and crops and personal property suffered damage across regions. Autos from Chawdersburg delayed arriving until late afternoon due to Marsh Creek bridge water. Gettysburg saw rainfall reported at 7.64 inches by Colonel Cope of the Battlefield Commission.

Saturday's Market Opens Busy With Abundant Produce
The market opened with three stalls filled with choice fruits and vegetables. Cantaloupes sold 4 to 10 cents, country watermelons vanished quickly, and corn brought 12 cents per dozen. Peaches ranged 2.00 to 2.59 per bushel, apples 10 to 20 cents per peck, tomatoes 10 to 15 cents per peck, eggs 19 cents per dozen, butter 20 to 24 cents per pound, and the last of the huckleberries sold for 5 cents per quart.
Smull's Hand Book Ready in October
State Superintendent of Printing Nevin Pomeroy has issued the order for the 1911 edition of Smull's Hand Book. The edition rises to 66,000 volumes to meet the census law requiring a copy to be sent to every public school in the state, up from 32,400. The printing will require 4200 reams of paper, weighing about 189,000 pounds, roughly five to six carloads, with distribution planned soon after October.
