Lee Escapes Pursuit From Adams County Jail Roof
John Lee fled from Adams County jail on June 24 and eluded Sheriff Thomas Barber and Washington county deputies as he and Hazel Gauger traveled the Middleburg pike. The arresting party seized Gauger. Lee vanished across fields toward Leitersburg, with reports Lee sold stolen chickens in Hagerstown. The daring escape began while prisoners played games in the yard, as Lee slipped out through a corridor and climbed the jail walls to the roof, then into West wall and into Mrs. Wible’s yard before escaping into the countryside. Authorities had tracked him near Waynesboro weeks earlier and awaited a chance to detain him.
