Richard M Ham, owner of the Eagle Hotel, killed himself with a revolver at noon Friday in Gettysburg. The act followed days of imagined financial troubles and pressures after dissolving a partnership with Neil McConomy. Ham, formerly head clerk at the Bellevue Stratford, had been popular at the hotel and in Philadelphia, with doctors pronouncing the fatal brain injury unsurvivable.
The Democrats won in Gettysburg and the county, with Peter P. Eisenhart elected director of the poor by 459 votes over Republican J. Price Oyler. Washington party candidate H. J. Gulden trailed. Harry Whitcomb led G. R. Haverstock by over 800 votes for jury commissioner, while J. H. Leas polled a small vote. Whitcomb and Haverstock elected. Unofficial county totals noted. S. F. Dunkle of Harrisburg visited Centre Square.
Gettysburg officials defer final action on buying a $7500 La France fire engine until the new town council is sworn in January. The joint committee and fire company plan a subscription drive to cover the other half of the cost, with delivery possible by early June.
A Mount Rock man, Paul Bunty, owned a pair of Siamese pigeons grown conjoined at the body under the wings. One bird died and was severed from the other, leaving the surviving mate still living. The birds could not have walked or flown if both had remained connected.
The Women's Leagues of Gettysburg College held their third annual convention in Brua Chapel with a keynote on Christian training for students. President Granville Prof Wentz and Beidelman spoke on Christian character, faculty faith and the aim to foster spiritual as well as academic growth. Activities included battlefield tour, a Brua Chapel concert by the Boys and a luncheon hosted by Mrs Granville.
Mrs. Frank Kemper aged 20 died Monday night at her parents home in Huntington township after a cold developed into pneumonia. She had planned to marry six weeks ago before Mr. Kemper's appendicitis required an operation. The couple married soon after and she contracted the illness while he was recovering at York Hospital. The funeral was held this morning at Lower Bermudian church. She leaves her husband, her parents, and several siblings in the York Springs and Hanover vicinity.
Bernard Jenkins, now at Irishtown, plans to move about April 1 1914 to the original Jekines farm site near Lilly mill dam beyond Irishtown. Francis C. Smith will take charge of the O'Roid farm adjoining McSherrystown once owned by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Bernard Jenkins, eldest son of the late Judge John L. Jenkins, is to occupy the farm after 37 years, having previously overseen St. Joseph Academy grounds at Emmitsburg.
Mrs George Ehrehart of New Oxford became the towns only licensed female gunner and killed 10 rabbits the legal limit after a day trip with her husband and brother. They visited the Wingerts home near New Chester before stalking rabbits with rifles into evening.
Adams County farmers husking corn urged to save ten ears for the Biglerville exhibit December 31 to January 3. Cash prizes will be awarded by a competent judge. Miss Mary Fry of Mt. Airy visits the home of Rev. and Mrs. J. M. Moser on Carlisle street.
Henry J. Fahnestock formerly of Gettysburg died in Watertown South Dakota on Thursday at 2 30 p m aged 86 years 2 months 25 days He was born August 11 1827 and educated at Gettysburg College He conducted mercantile business with his brother Dr E G Fahnestock in the Trimmer building He leaves one sister Mrs Louisa Cox of Baltimore Street and two sons and two daughters all in Watertown He was twice married first to Mary L Lord of Canaan Four Corners NY and later to Octave E Hill of Doylestown The funeral will be held in Watertown on Saturday Thomas L Adams died at his son Levi J Adams home in McSherrystown about 1 15 a m Thursday morning after weeks of illness aged 67 years 4 months 12 days He was a blacksmith at Brushtown for about 50 years He married Anna Stonesifer who died eleven years ago Surviving are children Levi J Adams Lewis Adams Henry Adams George Adams Emanuel Adams and one brother George Adams 21 grandchildren Funeral will be Saturday Nov 8 from St Marys Church McSherrystown with requiem high mass Rev L Aug Reucher officiating Interment in Conewago Chapel cemetery
Harry J. Topper died at his Hanover home after a three week typhoid illness. He was 38 years old and survived by his wife Stella Sanders and four children Nellie Bernadette Paul and Gregory. His parents and several siblings in Hunterstown Stone Jug Gettysburg Nachusa and Hun terstown also survive.
Frederick Winand will depart Latimore township after a near seven‑decade residence. He spent a summer in Lancaster county and in 1850 at Altoona built the third house there near the railroad’s edge to Hollidaysburg. He will be 85 next January and is highly respected in Latimore township.
Erney Myers from North Stratton Street visits Waynesboro today along with Mrs. Julia Oursler of Manchester and her daughter Mrs. Neeta Raby from Baltimore, visiting G. W. Weaver on East High Street.
