Final preparations for Gettysburgs dedication day May 31 press ahead with six flags and a granite shaft. Charles Kappes will place three large 24 by 36 foot American flags atop the monument after cleaning it to its best condition.
Ida Lehigh visits Hanover. H C Taylor hosts. Taft address stand near monument. cemetery praised. flowers funded by private effort. Gettysburg prepares for Memorial Day crowds with lemonade stands and photographers. Town cleanup underway. vendors set patriotic displays. residents report visitors and personal notices across routes 3 to 13 and nearby towns.
Multiple notices recount deaths in Adams County with details on ages, illness durations, family survivors, and funeral arrangements. Elizabeth Maring of Cumberland township dies after a 12 year illness at 58. Constable James W. Miner dies at 72. Sarah Zarboss and Mrs Israel Menges pass away in Hanover and Arendtsville respectively. Dr. William Hollinger of Abbottstown dies at 54 with service details listed. Several residents take trips to Chicago, Baltimore, and Gettysburg, while homes receive renovations and farms report corn planting delays. A post card shower marks Mrs Samuel Heck’s birthday and Miss Bertha Harner visits Seminary Ridge nearby. George A Taylor plans more improvements on Buford Avenue as local properties get touch-ups.
The scout car of the New York Herald Atlanta Journal endurance run arrived in Gettysburg after leaving Philadelphia and spent a day touring the battlefield. Driven by R. H. Johnson in a White Steamer, the crew praised some roads while condemning the worst stretches along the York pike and near Abbottstown. Representatives from both papers joined the pathfinding tour and praised Gettysburg’s welcome and surrounding area for the upcoming summer run through multiple Virginian towns.
Col. Henry A. Cole died in Baltimore on Wednesday morning. He commanded Cole's Cavalry Maryland Volunteers throughout the Civil War. Many friends in Adams County mourn his loss. Local command members include Oscar D. McMillan, William A. McIlhenny, Theodore McAllister, W.4. Lott, E.T. Wenschhof, George Jacobs, William Grogs, and A. M. Walker. The funeral was held in Frederick on Friday.
Workmen surveying a slope on the mountain edge uncovered a brass cannon buried about three feet deep. The discovery occurred Saturday while crews were working at the site. Local authorities were alerted to the find and will inspect the artifact for historical value.
Unclaimed letters include Miss Elliott G W Martin and Mr Harry Stauffer. Notices request claimants state advertisement. Mrs George N Laniffer of New Oxford travels to Dixon Illinois as Lutheran Woman's Home Missionary Society delegate. Mrs S A SWeikert of Woodsboro Md visits M C Fox on South Washington street. Mrs Susan Currens is ill at home. Miss Effie Clapeaddle returns from two weeks vacation with her parents in Buchanan Valley.
British Ambassador James Bryce visited Gettysburg College to address students but joked that American papers misquote him. He hosted an informal reception at the Eagle Hotel with Mrs Bryce and others. Bryce praised patriotism lessons from the battlefield and explored the site with Holtzworth guides. General Patterson and party traveled from Philadelphia for the monument dedication, then returned.
Col J Edward Minnick, almost seventy and one armed, a Civil War veteran from Philadelphia, travels on foot to Gettysburg then plans a shortest-route walk to Columbus Ohio in easy stages. He believes walking is good exercise and says he wears a blue uniform and can scare off trouble on lonely roads. He has never been molested and expects to walk more in the future.
The White Pine sanatorium plans a major expansion to house about 1000 patients, adding cottages and accompanying facilities. Already 9000 at the additional cottages are built, with new buildings to form a complete camp. Completion and readiness for occupancy are targeted before next winter to treat more tuberculosis sufferers.
A Grange meeting at Cashtown on May 28 in the school house elected H. L. Bream as president and Harry Bucher as secretary. State Lecturer Dorsett outlined Grange work and plans to return after mid June to form a permanent organization. A three member committee Gilbert Bucher, P. C. Sowers, Herman Bream will recruit members and fix a meeting place.
A movement is developing in Hampton to form a resident band for the town and nearby areas. Local talent is strong and supporters are urged to back the effort to create a well organized group.
