Town council sessions address bans on front displays by merchants and nontransferable fakirs licenses. Col Lewis E Beitler and G W Porter arrange 350 Boy Scouts from within 150 miles of Philadelphia to serve as orderlies guides and information bureau for veterans at Gettysburg anniversary. War Department approves supplies tents rations. Ice and ice cream contracts go to York firms with delivery by Western Maryland railway arriving by July 3 noon.
Mrs. Eliza Jane Bowers widow of William Bowers died at her Tyrone township home Tuesday evening at eight after a stroke at two in the afternoon. She was 68 years old and had visited her daughter that morning. She leaves two daughters Mrs Jacob Peters Tyrone township and Mrs Charles C Bream Hamilton township. a brother William Deardorff York and a sister Emma Deardorff Hampton. seven grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 1 p m at Heidlersburg Lutheran Church with Rev Eugene Dietterich. interment in the church cemetery. Friends may treat this as funeral notice.
A special committee was appointed to confer with Mr Turner on increasing street lights and other town lighting matters. Calvin Gilbert proposed a stone car to Reynolds Street residents but was not acted on. Pugh and Hubbard street contractors will start York Street block one, remove a private crossing at Gettysburg Supply House if needed, and replace hitching posts with iron posts on the curb. The alley south of Springs Avenue was ordained. Adjournment at 10:50.
The four seasons court at the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco 1915 features a niche housing statuary for spring summer autumn and winter. Henry Bacon designs the space with tropical plantings and mural paintings by Julius Guérin surround the colonnade’s columns.
The cavalry camp for July and August will be held near Winchester Virginia with 2500 troops for sixty days. Gettysburg loses the site after officials favored the broader maneuvers ground in Virginia and access to water and light. Secretary of War Garrison approved Winchester after evaluating sites in twelve states.
Theodore R. Iled of Keystone Brewery, York, asks the State Railroad Commission to rule on a rate increase by the Western Maryland Railroad for beer transport from York to East Berlin. The new charge rises from 9 to 15 cents per 100 pounds for full kegs and from 8 to 12 cents for empties.
Susie Taylor, a colored woman, charged with stealing a coat watch and money from James White, a colored highway crew worker, was arrested by Chief of Detectives Stoner in York. In default of bail she was committed to jail for a hearing before Alderman Stager.
American Bible Society will run six Bible sale stations at the camp with six experienced agents hosted by the War Department. Bibles will have blue and gray covers with undecided inscriptions and be shown at Miss Beck's store before the anniversary. Transportation requests for battlefield events are still being processed, with orders due next week. A 50,000 gallon water tank is being built by Western Maryland Railway at Camp Siding to supply coaches and engines until the anniversary, and a large 10,000 person assembly tent will be set on the Codori farm with eight acres leased as a pilot, plus two latrines and lumber arriving Thursday.
The Church of the Brethren will hold its annual conference next year in Washington state. The decision was made during this year's convention in Winona Lake Indiana. Business sessions began Tuesday and will run about ten days. An estimated 50 000 to 60 000 attended Sunday services, with many local delegates present.
Henry C Peters a former York Springs resident died in Wetmore Kansas May 29 at about 85 He was among the first men to run a canning establishment in the county and his funeral was held in Wolmore.
Xavier Hall hosted a small audience for a polished vaudeville program by the Xavier Literary and Dramatic Society. Highlights included A Marital Mishap, Tangles, Country Lanes and City Streets, and performances by The Four Rose Buds and Xavier Comedy Six.
Reuben I. Bair died at his home near Sells Station on Monday June 2 at 4 20 pm from dropsy and heart failure. He was 64 years 5 months and 28 days old. Survived by wife Athalia Carbaugh, two sons Lewis Emanuel and Reuben Arthur, one sister Alice Snyder, and two brothers Samuel and John. Funeral Thursday June 5 at 9 am at his home, with services and interment at Christchurch Littlestown conducted by Rev Dr Lindaman.
East Berlin residents filled a meeting Tuesday to back the York East Berlin trolley project subscribing nearly $15,000 in stock. A further gathering is planned next Tuesday with expectations to double subscriptions as organizers plan canvasses along three proposed lines for farmer offers of free right of way and stock inducements.
Congressman A. BR. Brodbeck of his district has been named to Public Lands Merchant Marine and Fisheries and Expenditures on the Post Office Department committees. The appointments reflect roles in overseeing public lands merchant marine and fisheries and post office spending.
James Neely a 73 year old retired farmer of Taneytown killed himself in a wood shed on his property. He was seen in town between 9 and 10 am and found later seated on excelsior with a pistol in his mouth. Neely, a widower who had recently lived with his daughter Mrs Claudis Long, had given most of his wealth away but still owned farm and town property.
Dr Charles M Stock died Wednesday at his Iron Ridge home near Hanover at age 58 after a year of illness. He taught at Gettysburg Seminary and served St Marks Lutheran Hanover for 25 years, was longtime secretary to Gettysburg College trustees, and held high Masonic offices. He leaves wife Mary McGlean, six children, and several in laws. funeral plans not announced.
The county board of farmers institute managers will meet at the county commissioners office on the second Tuesday of June to arrange institute locations for the season. All interested attendees should present their claims and attend.
Lawrence Bush son of Mrs. Jennie Bush from near Bendersville married Ruth Peters in Atchison Kansas on a Wednesday. The Peters family hails from As pers and the couple will reside in Atchison.
