Killed Beneath Shelter Tree Struck by Lightning
Ray Stroup, 16, oldest son of Mr and Mrs George Stroup, was killed instantly when lightning struck a tree on East Confederate Avenue during a Tuesday storm. Found two hours later, his body lay as he stood under the tree, with little disfigurement. Funeral set for 4 p.m. Thursday from the family home, Evergreen Cemetery interment. Roy Stroup leaves parents, sister Irene, and brother Earl. At Getttysburg battle a sharpshooter was tied to the same tree and killed by the enemy.

The town of New Baltimore atop the mountain near the White Pine sanatorium is expected to become a busy community as the sanatorium’s 900 patients will rise to about 5000 over a few years. A large staff will be needed and many staff may settle in New Baltimore for convenience.

Barn Burned During Storm Near Granite Station
Lightning struck the GR Thompson barn at Straban township near Granite Station destroying the building crops and implements. The tenanted farm of Charles Redding lost four hundred bushels of wheat and nearly all hay while stock were saved. Insurance covered Thompson for 1000 and Redding insured his drops. A storm also stunned several soldiers in hospital woods and drenched many at camp but caused no major damage.

A Shippensburg man asked Prof H A Surface if Paris green on cabbage could harm eating quality. The professor says it will not, endorsing 50 gallons of water per half pound of Paris green with soap, or two pounds arsenate of lead as a better-sticking alternative. Smithsburg growers meet to challenge peach freight hike
About 100 fruit growers from Smithsburg and nearby towns gathered to seek relief from the Western Maryland Railroad Company tariff increase on peaches. The plan called for resolutions urging the company to reduce the higher rates, which hit small shippers hardest, especially on carload versus less-than-carload lots.

Mrs Louis Weaver of North Street McSherrystown underwent an operation at her home Wednesday morning for abdominal trouble. Dr W S Gardner of Mercy Hospital Baltimore performed the operation assisted by Doctors A C and George L Rice and a trained nurse. The family has been severely afflicted as Mrs David Johns, mother of Mrs Weaver, recently returned from Methodist Hospital Philadelphia where she had a similar operation.

Midnight Fire at Ble Camp Rouses Six Thousand Troops
Shortly after midnight Wednesday the six thousand troops at Ble Camp were awakened by a fire alarm from division headquarters.
