Douglas Sentenced to Six Years in Eastern Penitentiary
Arthur Douglas, a colored man, arrested for assault and battery on Martha Taylor, was returned to the Eastern Penitentiary to serve six years of his original seven year term. He had been on parole for three years, and the arrest triggered the remainder of his sentence. The 1909 case stemmed from a street affray in which he fired several times at Charles Powell. Douglas was paroled after one year with a parole condition that he return if he violated terms. The Parole Officer escorted him to Philadelphia by train. The Taylor woman, who will face trial in April on a separate charge, kissed him goodbye as he left.
