The fifty fifth annual Adams County Teachers Institute hears W C Sheely dispute teaching as noble and defend current pay, while Dr A Dan Can Yocum argues for higher wages. Speakers from Penn and Shippensburg stress preparation, discipline, and modern methods as Gettysburg hosts lectures, songs, and debates through Thursday.
A very pleasant dance was held at Mr. and Mrs Allen Kane home on Wednesday evening November 24. Guests included numerous Kettle, McKenrick, Kimble, Kane, Dillon, Hall, Brady, and Woodward families with many couples and individual attendees from Paradise and surrounding areas.
A meeting of former Shippensburg Normal School students gathered Tuesday night in Xavier Hall Court House Library. About 70 attended with refreshments and a student program. Local teachers spoke, Miss Horton of the Shippensburg faculty addressed the group, and the event featured school songs and cheering.
A coal train passing near Boiling Springs helped save Ezra Mummum’s Mixel farm when a hake oven fire threatened the house and barn. The train crew used water from the engine tank to extinguish the flames, preventing total destruction.
Miss Katharine Orner, living with the late Fillmore Bushey's family in Harrisburg, fell into a serious health decline after an encounter with Mrs. Bates of Philadelphia who allegedly hypnotized her. Bates, who claimed to be pursuing Brown's estate, fled after a three day stay, taking clothes and evading detectives.
A pleasant surprise party honored Mr. and Mrs. Charles Winand of New Chester with 59 guests. Attendees included the Winands, the Weavers, March, Wagner, Leivelsperger, Wagner, Ziegler, Hankey, Trimmer, Myers, Yohe, Weaver, and Deardorff families plus several single guests.
During the Hanover theatre performance Mexican Joe slipped while descending on the cable when a steel cord was pulled from a clamp. He fell about ten feet into the aisle receiving a forehead bruise and other injuries including a painful wrench to the left leg. The act was suspended for the remainder of the evening.
Reports from Gettysburg area indicate drought has emptied county wells and driven turkey farmers to city markets or abroad. With feed costs high, most turkeys were not kept for Christmas, forcing residents to skirmish for in county birds or import them. Wells are failing daily, stock must be hauled to streams, and relief is needed before winter rain arrives.
A Saturday evening surprise party at Daniel Cromer and wife’s home in New Oxford honored Mr Cromer. Guests from nearby towns attended after games and music, with refreshments in the dining room. Attendees included numerous Cromer relatives and friends from New Oxford, Irish town, Hanover, Hunters town, Bonneauville, New Chester, Littlestown, and nearby areas.
A November 26 birthday social was held at Andrew Flickinger's Arendtsville home with games, salivdinamics, and late refreshments. Guests included Flickinger family, the Buchers, Bingamans, Jacobs, Flickinger and Deatrick relatives, Keller families, Hartzel, Miller, Thomas, Heagy, Potters, Moose, Haverstock, Funt, and Adams among others.
Citizens of Conewago township fear a wave of hold ups around McSherrystown and Midway as the Adams County Court prepares to sentence suspects. Paul Small reports being threatened by a revolver when accosted late at night, with locals urging constables to hunt the assailants who have not yet secured any loot.
Dr George Rupp Pretz of Lebanon and Misa Caroline May Eawney of Gettysburg were married at Rev Norman S Wolf's home in Shrewsbury. The couple left for a wedding trip to Philadelphia and paints in New Jersey and will reside in Lebanon after returning.
Charles Woodward of Buchanan Valley shot a fine buck on a mountain hunt, weighing 135 pounds with four pronged antlers. He has killed five deer in successive years and is noted as a skilled marksman who knows deer haunts. A fawn stood beside the dead deer without fear after the shot.
Philadelphia minister Rev. Dr. Russell H. Conwell president of Temple University and pastor of The Temple Baptist Church is reported ill with a general breakdown. He has been removed to Atlantic City for treatment and is well known to Gettysburg readers for his lectures here.
A fire Sunday morning at Mrs Mary Gleninger's house on Mount St Mary's College campus, Emmitsburg, was caused by a defective flue. Mrs Gleninger discovered fumes on her return from church. Students and seminarians aided in saving personal effects, but the house was burned to the ground.
Harvey Miller son of Mr and Mrs Amos Miller wed Miss Margaret Riley daughter of Mr and Mrs John Riley on November 23 at Westminster Maryland. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. L Emory Bennett pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. Both newlyweds reside in Cumberland township.
