Barn Burner Threatens Farms Near Mt Joy Church

A well dressed man demanded food at Dehoof farm near Barlow then at Slagle farm. He threatened to burn houses and barn, swore at residents, and fled toward Harney evading pursuers. A posse and Sheriff Fissel pursue the suspect still at large.

Diamond Robbery at Pen Mar Strikes Local Cottage

At Pen Mar on August 20 a robber crept into a cottage where Mrs. Jerome Diggs of Baltimore stayed with George Myers. He stole more than 4090 including railroad tickets and marked diamonds worth 150, a brooch valued 1800, a pinworth 50, and earrings 405. Detectives from the W M R RR and others are pursuing the thief.

Lincoln penny like nickel launches in currency system

The new Lincoln penny has a strong launch as a currency unit. Telephone companies note the increased size and weight makes the penny usable in place of nickels in phones. Penny slot machine owners report incompatibility with the larger coin. No remedy is yet known.

Harrisburg Clergyman to Preach at Zion Lutheran

Rev. J. Edw. Harris formerly of this place will occupy Zion Lutheran church pulpit in Harrisburg next Sunday in the pastor's absence. Rev. Winfield Herman will preach at Temple Lutheran church in Philadelphia. Rev. Dr. A. Pohhnan is the pastor.

Owing to a denomination camp meeting, the week of meetings at Mt Olivet church will be held one week later than planned.

Adams County Teachers Convene Annual Summer Meeting

The Adams County teachers held their annual summer meeting starting Thursday at 10 o'clock with about 150 educators present. County Superintendent Roth gave a welcoming address and emphasized higher education for teachers and studying school laws. five questions for afternoon discussion were proposed on institute adjournment, meeting length, mass meetings, school opening date, and visiting other schools. Supt Wegner of Franklin County was introduced.

Surprise Birthday Party for Mr Millheimes at Schreeder Farm

A Friday evening social honored Mr Millheimes on his 32nd birthday at the W.8 Schreeder farm home. Numerous neighbors and relatives attended, sharing well wishes for many more happy gatherings. The Lutheran church council announced preaching services by Rev. Jacob M. Stover at Wenksville and Bendersville with a pastor vote after each service. Harvest Home service set for Biglerville on August 22 at 10 am.

The Gettysburg Athletic Juniors defeated the White Elephants 14 to 7 on Wednesday afternoon. Billy Duncan and Mickey Black powered the winning team with a strong battery performance.

Boys Club Camp With Rev Clare Arrives Near York

The St Mathews Boys Club led by Rev R E Clare arrived in town after noon Tuesday. They march in fours to Seminary Ridge and pitch camp on the First Day's Battle firing line. The camp features eight wall tents a cook tent and khaki uniforms with red neckties. Twenty eight members are listed including Rev Clare Fred Gladfelter and Charles Pensinger with Frank Bowersox as cook.

OFF TO THE SEASHORE ADAMS COUNTY FOLK FLOCK TO ATLANTIC

Atlantic the White City by the sea draws Adams county residents for a yearly seashore trip. Reservations filled, seats in the chair car all taken seven days ahead. Lightning Strikes Barns in County Thunderstorm

A severe storm across the county damaged two barns near Taneytown and Smithonry, injuring one horse and tearing roof ends. Electrical wires were destroyed, halting electric service and burning some phones. A hail storm damaged corn and knocked apples in Centre Mills and Heidlersburg areas.

Mrs Sarah A Miller dies in Baltimore at 35 after cancer

Mrs Sarah A Miller wife of H Milton Miller of Pleasant Street Hanover died at Union Protestant Infirmary Baltimore on Thursday from stomach cancer aged about 35. She was admitted July 31, operated August 4 and another operation failed. She leaves two daughters Mabel and Ethel and son Earl with her husband plus her mother and four sisters and three brothers.

Elizabeth I Sowers Dies After Long Illness

Mrs Elizabeth T Sowers of Aspers died Thursday morning around eight from paralysis after a long cancer battle. Survived by two daughters Mrs Hewitt and Mrs Bush, six grandchildren. Born July 1 1887 she was 72 years 1 month and days old. Friends meet Saturday at 1 AM, funeral by Rev Gaoler of York Springs Methodist. Visitors include Mrs Omer and two children of Waynesburg and Miss Annie Robinson and Ellen Miller of New Oxford visiting William L King.
