Native Grass Seed Could Boost Farm Income This Fall
Range specialist Neal Stidham says grazing lightly on a meadow with a good native grass stand can yield a profitable native seed crop this year. Expect $20 to $25 an acre on shares, with seed cured and stored in the owner’s barn. Harvest is mid October, from the 5th to the 20th, and buyers can arrange custom harvesting. The process won’t harm the grass and cows will target seed heads first. Continuous grazing should stop now to protect winter forage.
