U SDA analysts forecast a 2 billion pound 1976-77 tobacco crop down 7 percent as acres drop while chewing tobacco output rises. Record high flue cured prices contrast with rising imports and abundant stocks. Demand in Middle East and Japan supports U S cigarette tobacco use amid stable or declining cigars and snuff.
U SDA reports a 5.89 billion bushel corn crop the largest ever, though August weather trimmed yields to 82.8 bushels per acre nationwide. Analysts differ on total, with figures from 5.59 to 5.98 billion, as wind damage and drought linger in the Great Plains and north central states.
The Farmers Home Administration cooperates on experiments to heat homes with solar energy and to dispose of waste.
