Farmers Invest Heavily In Acreage Amid Rising Debts
Washington AP reports farmers are plunging into real estate debt to buy high priced land as profits reach new highs. Real estate debt rose to 494.5 billion, up 3.2 billion from a year earlier, a 10.2 percent annual increase the largest since 1965. The Agriculture Department forecasts land values push debt to about 923.7 billion this year, up 4 billion from 1972’s peak, aided by easier credit and high farm income. The shift reflects changes in lending by federal land banks under the Farm Credit Act, with farm mortgages via land banks up nearly 1 percent in 1973. The report notes strong land price trends and continued credit availability as farmers expand acreages.
