Troopship Torpedoed. 2800 Soldiers Safe After Beaching

An AP report says a troop ship carrying 2800 American soldiers was torpedoed 200 miles from the Eng gulf at 3 PM Friday. All hands were saved as the vessel beached, with troops from Chicago and Cleveland among the survivors.

East Central Normal marks tenth year with 294 enrollments

East Central Normal School begins its tenth year amid war conditions with 294 enrollments and more expected. Chapel begins Friday at 11. Four faculty members remain in the field teaching SATC, while advanced students cover classes. Several parents seek enlistment for their sons. Faculty list includes Gordon, Covington, McClure, Robinson, Newcomb and others. Enrollment surpasses 300 for first three days. football practice starts. SATC admission interest grows with 50 to 60 applicants so far. Prof Newcomb arrives to start math and athletics duties.

Pontotoc County Expands Legal Advisory Board

About 85 associate members join 35 lawyers to assist in filing new questionnaires. The board, led by Orel Bunby Robi Wimbish and C. T. Barney, appoints volunteers across towns to speed registrations. list includes numerous named registrants and law firms.

Ada Citizens Back Student Army Training Corps Meeting

A mass meeting at the Ada courthouse Wednesday night supported forming the Students Army Training Corps at East Central Normal. C V Gowing presided and Gordon outlined entrance qualifications, including high school graduates or equivalent work, with possible later lowering of standards for worthy applicants. Committees were named to raise funds for advertising and recruit men across the district.

German Report of Tuesday’s Battle Near Ypres and Gouzeaucourt

Berlin says British attempt to advance south of Ypres and north of the La Bassée canal was repulsed. The German war office reports prisoners taken and British attacks reaching the first line at few points near Gouzeaucourt and around Epehf. About 3,000 British prisoners were captured.

Sing Song Club Organizes in Ada For Liberty Loan Drive

The Queen Esther Chorus forms the Sing Song Club of Ada in Methodist church parlors. Members will study National Airs for war use with first rehearsal set for Thursday Sept 12 at 4 pm. Each member to bring copies of The Maple Leaf Forever Rule Britannia Italian National Hymn The Marseillaise and Sombre et Meuse.

Weeting of Ladies Committee Called

First WWI selective service call to include teens and 32s

Provost Marshal General Crowder announced the initial call to colors will include men in the nineteen and twenty year old classes and in those from thirty two to thirty six. Questionnaires will go to registrants and local boards ordered to classify them for October calls. Eighteen to twenty year olds will be inducted into the student army training corps.
